The HEARTH

“Around the hearth, the first groups assembled; around it the first alliances were formed…The first sign of human settlement and rest after a hunt or battle was the setting up of a fireplace. Throughout all phases of society the hearth formed that sacred focus around which the whole took order and shape. Can the market place become the hearth (and heart) of a community in the contemporary urban context?
