From what we have been told on the street we have started lisiting up some of the core issues that is facing the market:

Political issues

1. Lack of communications between different interest groups of Berwick street market (These are listed below):

a) The councill wants to invest in the market (ever since the sixties) but lack the ability to communicate between developers and the market people

b) Market stall holders struggle getting long term lisenses from the councill (due to uncertanity of pending developments). This uncertainity does also prevent the council to provide the infrasstructure needed for the market traders. This infrastructure is sanitary/toilet fascilities, access to water to clean market stalls and electricity.

c )Storefront owners: Akward licensing of lunchtime market stalls have caused problems for restaurant owners on the northside of Berwick Street. Further down the street some storefront owners would prefer some kind of system to guarantee visibility from one side of the street to the others. Due to the organisation of the market, market stalls are oriented towards west turning their back to the storefronts on the east side of the street.

d) Developers: Berwick street is located between Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus and has a large investment potential for commercial purposes. There is constant worries by the locals that any involvment ofdevelopers would lead to a gentrified market or the rebuilding of Kemp house transforming this into a buildingsite.

e) People using the market: There is a lot of history to the market and a lot of people are emotionally attached to the street. Everything from bussiness workers to residentals are using this lunchtime market that it has mainly become. Bringing the storefornts out to the street to give the market a greater vareirety of stalls is something that  people have expressed a need for. The situation ath the moment is that Soho has more of a bussiness distrcit rather than a residental district makeing themarket more attractive as a lunchtime market rather the great variety it had fifthy years ago. Tis trend is changing now that more and more office spaces in Soho is being transformed to residental appartments again.

4. A compost system behind the Kemp house would help localising the cleaning systems to recyckle food and cardboard waste in the street (limiting the amount of cleaning wans that needs to acces the street and transport the wast to the south west end of Soho.

2. The southend of the market can (according to some people that have aproached us) scare people away. Others see this as a part of the caharacter of the market.

3. The concrete canopy of the Kemp  house (will be demolisghed) is according to the residents a magnet to unsocial behaviour. But is still the only shelter for the market traders during bad weather.


1 Strong winds caused by the height of the Kemp House tower is one of the core problems for the market traders in terms of the cold winds as well as the strong winds that send their market goods flying down the street. Some days they cant even mount their market stalls because the winds are too strong.
